Abstract

9009. Ferguson, T., and Johnstone, J. R. April 17. Lighting and heating systems ; systems of charging and discharging galvanic batteries.- The battery of a variable-speed generator lighting system is divided into two parts adapted to be connected in parallel when on charge and in series when on discharge In a modification, the battery is divided into three parts, one part containing one-half, and the other parts onequarter, of the total number of cells. When on charge, the smaller parts are connected in series with each other and in parallel with the larger part, while on discharge the smaller parts are connected in parallel with each other and in series with the larger part. The connecting-switch of the dynamo and the battery switches are combined, and are operated by a solenoid controlled by a centrifugal switch or directly by the centrifugal device. An overcharge-preventing device for the battery, consisting of an electro-magnetic switch controlling the circuit of the cut-in switch, is also provided. In thear angement shown in Fig. 4, the battery is divided into two parts C, D adapted to be connected in parallel across the dynamo A by closing the switches E, G, J and opening the switches F, H, and in series across the lamp circuit by opening the switches E, J, G and closing the switches F, H. The movable contacts of the switches E, F, G, H, J are mounted on an insulating drum A', Fig. 2, the spindle B' of which is connected to a slotted lever J<1> engaging a pin H<1> on the core G' of the solenoid E<1>. The circuit of the solenoid E<1> is controlled by a centrifugal switch comprising a slip-ring M<1>, Fig. 4. a brush N, and a centrifugally-operated contact P mounted on the spindle of the dynamo. A voltage coil X placed across the battery C, D is adapted to open the circuit of the solenoid E<1> when the battery is fully charged. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, tl,e battery is divided into three parts C, D, E. The parts E, D are adapted to be connected in series with each other and in parallel with the part C, when on charge, by closing the switches F, G, J, M and opening the switches L, H, K ; when on discharge, the battery supplies the lamps with the parts E, D in parallel with each other and in series with the part C, by opening the switches F, G, J, M and closing the switches H, K, L.
