Abstract

185. Johnson, A. H. Jan. 4. Surface treatment with liquid materials.-Consists in the combination of a sanding- device for locomotives with means for removing the sand by steam, water, or compressed - air jets after the driving-wheels have passed over the sand. As shown in the Figure, the sand-boxes b are controlled by a rod e and handle f. The fluid supply g is controlled through a valve i, which is opened by a tappet l on the rod e when the sandvalves are opened. The sand and fluid supplies, though operated by a single lever f, are separately cut off, a rod k and lever k' being provided for closing the valve i.
