Abstract

29,667. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, G. T. Dec. 21. Breech actions, sliding breech-block; breech actions, sliding barrel and breech-block. - Relates to automatic guns having a handle and catch device for adapting for non - automatic use, the handle remaining stationary when the gun is fired automatically, and consists in forming the catch device as a longitudinallysliding bar, normally held out of engagement with the breech-bolt by a spring, but capable of being tilted to engage the bolt. In the construction shown, the bar U, provided with a handle C<1>, has a longitudinal T-shaped slot c, Fig. 3, engaging a corresponding rib b on the breech frame. The top edge of the slot is straight, but the bottom edge comprises two inclined surfaces c<3>, c<4> forming a fulcrum c<Î> at the middle. The bar is normally held with its rear end depressed, as shown in Fig. 1, by means of the spring-controlled arm C<4>. In this position, a projection C<2> at the front of the slot prevents backward movement of the bar. When the bar is tilted, a projection c' at the rear engages a depression a<1> on the breech-block, and the projection C' prevents the bar from becoming disengaged during the reciprocation of the bolt. The bar can be used for forcing home a tight-fitting cartridge which has prevented complete closure of the breech during automatic firing. An inclined projection c<o>, Fig. 9, on the bar C is adapted to engage a corresponding projection d<o> on a grip safetylever D, of the kind described in Specification 29,663/10, to lift the rear end of the grip lever and prevent it from jamming the sear.
