Abstract
26,437. Caddy, S. C. Nov. 14. Coiling.-In an apparatus for coiling steel and other wire, a pair of driven heads are used, one driving a rotating mandrel and the other having a chuck and a hollow spindle and the wire passes through a hole in one of a pair of dies in a spring-controlled sliding carrier which presses the wire onto the mandrel. The wire d passes over a pulley f, through a hole in the hinged part a<2> of the carrier, and through the die a<3>. The dies a<3>, a' which may be of metal, vulcanite, &c. have semicircular grooves to engage the mandrel and also enlarged semicircular or V-grooves to receive the wire, and both may be reversible or interchangeable for coiling different sizes of wires or diameters of coil. The part a<2> is connected to the part a by a screw c to vary the pitch of the coil. One end of the wire is gripped by a spring or automatic chuck h rotated by a belt in a head stock i and the mandrel c, which may be a wire if the wire to be coiled is very fine, is rotated in the headstock l. The carrier is traversed by the coiling operation along rods b against the action of springs m. When the carrier has reached the end of the mandrel, it is arrested by a brake n which stops the rotation of the chuck, which is opened to allow the completed section of the coil to be drawn through the hollow headstock and over a drum or through a tube by the spring return of the carrier. Coiling may then be resumed, and any length of coil thus produced. The brake may be operated by a pedal lever or automatically by cam or trigger releasing or return gear.
