Abstract

163,058. Caddy, S. C. Nov. 6, 1919. Coiling; dies.-In a. continuous wire-coiling machine for making coils for wire mattresses, fabrics, springs, &c., of the type in which a pair of driven heads respectively rotate a mandrel on which a spring- pressed die-carrier is traversed, and a hollow spindle carrying an automatically-opened wire-gripping chuck through which the wire is pressed at intervals, the chuck is opened and closed by means acting in connection with means operated by the die-carrier. A mandrel 3 is secured at its ends to positively rotated chucks 4, 5, of which the chuck 5 is carried by a hollow spindle 6 and is arranged to be opened and closed automatically so that the completed length of coil may be forced therethrough. A die-carrier 7 provided with bifurcated ends to render it steady during operation, is normally pressed along rods 8 towards the chuck 5 by springs 14. The die is in two parts respectively contained in the carrier and in a hinged flap 17, which is secured in position by a screw 21. Steel wire is passed from a swift over a pulley on the flap and through a hole in the flap and upper part of the die, is coiled by hand round the mandrel and is then secured to the. mandrel by the chuck 5 and coiling is then started. During the coiling operation the carrier is pushed forward by the coil against the action of the springs, a wheel 25 carried thereby running along a lever 10, which is pivoted at 11 and provided at one end with a brake shoe 13 normally held out of action by a spring 28. When the wheel engages on inclines on the other end of the lever, the lever is depressed at this end so as to raise the brake shoe into contact with the chuck 5, which is thus opened. The lever is held in this position by a spring-pressed rod carried bv the lever, which in this position is shot into a hole in a spring-pressed and screw-adjusted block on the standard 34. As soon as the chuck is opened, the, finished length of coil is pushed through the chuck by the spring- presseddie-carrier. At the end of this motion a tappet on the die carrier withdraws the spring- pressed bolt from the block and the lever is thus retained by the spring 28 to remove the brake and allow the chuck to grip the wire and thus continue coiling. The bracket 34 is furnished with a screw stop to control the upward limit of the lever. In a modification, the spring-pressed bolt may be dispensed with, the brake being arranged to be put on when the wheel rises a short distance' up the incline on the lever and being put off again when it returns to the straight portion thereof, so that a small delivery of wire coil in rapid succession is produced. The die may be varied in size so as to vary the grip on the wire and so modify the elasticity of the coil. The wire may be of round, elliptical, or angular cross-section.
