Abstract
1,273,695. Making lamp filament supports; coiling. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 5 Feb., 1970 [13 Feb., 1969], No. 5586/70. Headings B3A and B3E. [Also in Division H1] Lamp coil supports 6 are produced by rotating a locking chuck 2, 6 relative to a spindle 17 in a clockwise direction as seen in Fig. 9 until the end of an arcuate slot 36 engages the head of a set screw 35, at which time the inner end of a shoulder 33 on the face of a nosepiece 28 is at the end of a slot 34. The end of a wire 43 extending from a spool 44 through a support 47, is placed against the shoulder 33 and is slid along the shoulder into the end of the slot 34. The locking chuck is then released to permit a torsion spring 37 to rotate it relative to the spindle 17 so that the wire is clamped in the slot 34 by the shoulder 33. The spindle 37 is rotated so that the wire 43 is wound helically around the surface 31 of the spindle for one and a half turns 47<SP>1</SP> after which the wire rides down on a spiral track 48 of a die to form the spiral portion 48<SP>1</SP> of the support. The spiral portion is interrupted by a straight ohordal section 49 and the wire makes a sharp bend at 52 as it turns radially inward at 53. The wire then engages with a filament mandrel 7 between adjacent pairs of turns of the filament coil 2 to form several small diameter turns 54. The direction of the coiling is then reversed to form a looking overwind 55 by a cam operated pivotal movement of a finger member 56 to the left as seen in Fig. 2. The wire 43 is then cut at the end of the overwind 55 and a pressure finger 64 is forced against the helical turns 47<SP>1</SP>. The end of support 6 is released from the slot 34 by rotating the chuck 26 and the pressure finger 64 is pulled away slightly from the spindle 17. Thus the outer turns 47<SP>1</SP> are freed and unwind ¢ to ¥ of a turn before they are restricted by the pressure finger 64. After the finger 64 has been completely lowered, a filament coil holding collet 18 is opened and the filament coil 2 is advanced for forming the next support.
