856,521. Coiling; angular bending. VEREENIGDE DRAADFABRIEKEN N.V. Oct. 27, 1958 [Oct. 29, 1957], No. 34352/58. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for making wire spirals having straight extremities extending substantially in alignment with each other comprises a rotating winding head, a wire guide member and a mandrel on which the wire is wound and which can be retracted on completion of the winding and is characterized in that the wire guide member is swingably mounted with respect to the mandrel in such a way that during winding the wire is fed to the mandrel through the mouthpiece of the wire guide member at an angle to the axis of the mandrel substantially equal to, or slightly less than, the angle of the winding pitch. Wire 6, clamped at one end in a channel 2 in a winding head 1, is guided to a mandrel 4, on which it is wound by rotation of the head 1, by a guide 5 inclined relative to the mandrel 4 so that its guide channel 5<1> is at, or slightly less than, the pitch angle. The guide 5 is carried by a slide 10 moved along the mandrel 4 during winding by a wedge 15 moved by electromagnetic means acting against a brake and engaging a roller 22 on the slide 10. Just after the requisite number of turns has been wound the winding head 1 is stopped and rotated back a little, slightly to expand the coil, being correctly positioned by the engagement of a recess in a cam 31 on the head engaging a roller. The guide 5 is then swung around a pivot on the slide 10 past a position in alignment with the wire in the head 1, to overbend the wire about a guidepin 8 on the guide 5, and then back into alignment with the head 1. The guide 5 is then again moved axially of the mandrel 4, this time by a wedge 15<1>, moved by electromagnet means and engaging a roller 23 on the slide 10, to form a straight end portion of the wire. The wire is unclamped from the head 1 and clamped by the guide 5 while the guide 5 continues to move. The mandrel 4 is retracted axially and the finished coil is cut off by cutters 12.
