Abstract

827,128. Making gilled tubes; coiling; angular bending. CARRIER CORPORATION. March 26, 1958 [March 27, 1957], No. 9751/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of forming fins about a rotating and advancing tube comprises the steps of winding a folded ribbon about the tube with the fold adjacent the tube and separating the folded sections of the ribbon to form helical fins on the tube. Strip 2 fed over a pulley 3, through a slot guide 4, through rolls 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, 10, 11, which fold the strip longitudinally, and through a slot guide 13 to a tube 17. The tube 17 which may be roughened by knurled rolls 21 is rotated and fed axially by means 20. From the guide 13 the folded strip is wound by co-operating conical rolls 15, 16 on to the tube 17, being guided as it leaves the rolls by a helical plate 14. Three sets 18, 24, 25 of spacing discs located 120 degrees apart around the tube then space and separate the wound folded strip. Discs 30-36, Fig. 6, of each set serve to space the wound strip while discs 40-42 separate the two parts 2<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>11</SP> of the fold. The angle between the axes of the rolls 15, 16 may be less than 90 degrees. The sets of discs may be motor-driven.
