A method of making helically finned tubing by spirally winding a strip of metal on to a continuously rotating and advancing tube comprises longitudinally feeding the strip towards the tube with the strip disposed edgewise to the surface of the tube with one edge thereof in a line intersecting the periphery of the tube to radially deform one edge of the strip on the surface of the tube into tight-fitting embrace about the periphery of the tube whilst stretching the opposite edge of the strip to form a helical fin. A tube 28 is rotated and fed longitudinally, by means 29 (not shown) through a hollow shaft 17 rotated by a pulley 20. Strip 45 from a reel (not shown) passes between rolls 50, 51, Fig. 3, which form a flange 63 along one edge of the strip, the roll shafts being journalled in an adjustable bracket 57. The thus-flanged strip then passes over an arcuate guide 64, Fig. 8, having side guide flanges 66. The guide 64 is rotatably adjustable about two mutually perpendicular axes and bodily adjustable relatively to the tube 28. A nose part 67 of the guide 64 leads the strip 45 between a conical-nosed forming roll 22, secured to and coaxial with the rotating hollow shaft 17, and a dished wheel 24 on an adjustable shaft 32. The roll 22 and wheel 24 co-operate to thin the outer, non- flanged edge of the strip 45 to coil it helically, tightly, around the rotating and advancing tube 28. The strip flange 63, now engaging the tube, is pressed more firmly against the tube by a pair of parallel discs 86 urged upwardly by a spring 102 and latch means.
