Abstract
772,662. Coiling helically jointed tubes; corrugating. A.B.C. ANSTALT. Jan. 19, 1954 [Jan. 23, 1953], No. 1567/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Groups V and XXVIII] Helically-grooved pipe or hose is made by helically winding strip metal on a coiling mandrel, drawing off and helically corrugating the helically wound tube by internal and external rollers, and compressing the corrugations axially by hindering the feed of the tube from the corrugating means and smoothing or pressing their outer surface. Strip from reels 4, 4<SP>1</SP> on a rotor 2 is wound in an overlapping manner on a coiling mandrel 6, Fig. 1; 18, Fig. 4, and is drawn, therefrom and helically corrugated by a series of ribbed rollers 18<SP>1</SP> freely journalled in the periphery of the rotated mandrel 18, engaging the interior of the tube and co-operating with a series of ribbed rollers 14<SP>1</SP> engaging the exterior of the tube and freely journalled in a ring 14 rotated around the tube at the same speed as the mandrel 18. The delivery of the grooved tube from the mandrel is hindered and the corrugations compressed axially by a fixed sleeve 21 engaging the outside of the tube and any rotation of the tube is stopped by a member 29 carried by a rod 28 passing through the mandrel. The corrugations are smoothed or pressed on their outer surface, as they leave the corrugating rollers, by peripheral smoothing rolls 25 carried by a ring 23 rotated around the tube by a shaft 27. The rollers 25 may be cylindrical or frustoconical with their small ends facing the corrugating means. In a modification, Figs. 10, 12, the corrugating means comprise a ring or nut 30, having a thread 31 and an inclined roller 33 journalled at the beginning of the thread, and a mandrel or worm 34, with a thread 35 and roller 37. Two or more grooving rolls may be arranged successively in the path of the threads 31 or 35. In an arrangement, Figs. 2, 3, described as known an externally-threaded mandrel 6 co-operates with a threaded nut 8 rotated at the same speed as the mandrel to corrugate the tube, the nut 8 being formed with a groove smoothing surface 13.
