Abstract
24,982. Becker, H. Oct. 27. Processes and materials for treating hides and skins.-Hides and skins are pured by a mixture of bacterial cultures and their metabolic products and enzymes together with digestive juices of the animal body or digestive enzymes, fatdecomposing substances being optionally employed in addition. The bacterial culture may be mixed with the corresponding digestive juice or purified animal or vegetable enzyme and the decomposer of fat, or the substances may be used separately, and preferably in such order as to imitate the processes going on in the intestines. With especially hard skins, a small quantity of papayotin or papain may be added to the bacterial culture medium; softer skins are treated first with a weak solution of the digestive ferments, and then with the bacterial liquor. Such substances as sugar, molasses, salts of ammonia, organic acids, or their salts, may be used to dissolve the lime. Sheep and goat skins particularly rich in fat are immersed in a bacterial liquor containing ground castor-oil seed or oil cake in suspension, and the fatty acids thereby liberated form soluble soaps with the ammonia derived from the proteid matter which breaks down. Hemp seed, or its extract, gall, or sulpho - ricinoleic acid may also be used for decomposing the fat.
