Fire-bars and grates; fire-bridges; air, supplying; ashes, removing.-A steam-boiler furnace grate specially adapted for use with forced draught, but adaptable for use with natural draught, comprises longitudinal hollow airheating bearers a, Fig. 3, communicating at the rear with the ash-pit end at the front with the hollow dead-plate b, Fig. 2, from which air passes into air conduits between the bearers a by way of openings d<1> in rotatable tubular dampers d, and thence through the spaces between the transverse fire-bars j to the fuel. The dampers d are provided at the front with injector nozzles e and are closed at their rear ends, the upper parts of the dampers being cut away, as shown, to allow for the passage of air to the fuel. By turning the dampers tliiough 90 degrees air may pass freely between the bearers to the fire, and the furnace is thus worked with natural draught. By rotating the dampers through 180 degrees, ashes accumulated therein may be dumped into the ash-pit. The fire-bars are provided with corrugations, and have their webs suitably shaped to accommodate the rotary dampers and to form air conduits between the bearers. In a modification, shown in Fig. 10, the fire-bars are formed integral with the bearers a. The side dampers d bear against partitions f, which form air conduits for supplying air to a bridge chamber g or to the bearers a. The fire-bridge comprises side cheeks h of the sectional form shown in Fig. 6, and having tongues h<2> engaging with grooves i<1> in the bridge-bars i, which are spaced apart to allow for the passage to the fire of air from the air-conduits between the bearers a or from the bridge chamber g.
