Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. PER-RY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in furnaces; and it consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, whereby there are secured great economy, intense heat, the maximum evaporation, the greatest possible perfection of combustion, and an absence of noxious gases.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated the invention as applied to the f urn aces of locomotive-engines and vertical boilers.
The invention pertains particularly to means located within and along the outer edges of the fire-box of the furnace for efiecting proper combustion and the burning of gases, and it is not confined to any particular shape or make of boiler.
The invention will be more fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section. through a portion of a locomotive-engine having a fire-box or furnace constructed in accordance with and embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section of a portion of same on the dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is ahorizontal section through the fire-box or furnace of a vertical boiler e1nploying the invention. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical section through a-portion of the device constituting my invention, the section being on the dotted line a at of Fig. 5. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of same on the dotted line 5 5 of Fig. 4., and Fig. 6 is a bottom perspective view of one of the sections of firebrick forming a part of the invention.
In the drawings, A designates the usual furnace or fire-box, provided with the customary grate-bars B. Along the outer edges of the grate-bar surface and adjacent to the vertical walls of the furnace or fire-box are the series of castings or blocks D in end contact with one another and having the vertical openings 1) and lugs E, the latter being provided to keep the blocks D a suitable distance from the walls of the fire-box and as 5 5 affording a means whereby the blOCkSdllfLY be bolted down, if desired. The blocks D rest upon the grate-bars B and form a continuous series extending entirely'along the outer edges of the fire-box; and upon this series of blocks are placed the sections F of fire-brick, which are specially formed to fit upon said blocks and meet one another at their ends, whereby when said sections F are in position they will form a continuous line of fire-brick and fully protect all of the blocks D.
The sections F are of the form illustrated in Figs. 4; and 6, in which it will be seen that each section is provided with the thickened inner member G, the outer thinner member H, fitting between the blocks D and the vertical walls of the furnace, and an arch or upper member I, connecting the members G H and passing over the top of the blocks D, whereat said member I is provided with the 7 5 series of openings J to permit the escape of the air and steam which may ascend through the openings D. The thickness of the upper member I gradually lessens toward its outer end, Where it merges into the short vertical member H. v
As illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, the sections F closely impinge against one another and fully occupy the space along the outer edges of the fire-box, the lower ends of the members G of said sections being on a level with the lower ends of the blocks D and fitting against the grate-bars. The sections of firebrick F form a complete housing for the blocks D and protect the same from the in- 0 tense heat generated by my invention.
Below the grate-bars B and blocks D is arranged the line of piping K, which is connected by a pipe L with the steam-dome M and provided with the series of nozzles N, 5 which extend upward into the lower ends of the openings D.
The fire having been started upon the gratebars B, air and steam will pass upward through the openings D and mingle with the flames and gases within the firebox, thereby promoting combustion, which is-accelerated,
intensified, and rendered more perfect by the injection of steam from the nozzles N. The steam and air will thoroughly commingle and meet the flames and gases and. insure the full and complete combustion of the same,'the cinders, gases, and smoke being ignited and consumed and the fuel compelled to do its full duty without waste.
The invention is equally applicable to furnaces which are either rectangular or circular in cross-section, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, and in either use of same the sections F will have their side edges in contact with one another, so as to form a complete line of sections extending entirely around the fire-box and fully protecting all of the pipes D.
The blocks D are of a nature to resist the action of the heat, especially when the firebrick sections F are employed, and the interior openings D of these blocks constitute pipes up through which the air or air and steam may pass to the fire-box. The blocks D and fire-brick F being of equal proportions as to length, the openings D will always come into alinement with the apertures J.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The furnace having the grate-bars, c0n1- bined with the series of pipes arranged along the edges of the furnace, and the series of casings within the fire chamber over the grate, said casings completely covering the tops of said pipes and the sides thereof adjacent to the fire and being provided with perforations in their top over said pipes; substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The furnace having the grate-bars, combined with the series of pipes arranged along the edges of the furnace, the series of nozzles N located below and leading to said pipes and connected with a source of supply, and the series of casings within the fire-chamber over the grate, said casings completely covering the tops of said pipes and the sides thereof adjacent to the fire and being provided with perforations in their top over said pipes; substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
The furnace having the grate-bars, combined with the series of pipes along the outer edges of the furnace, and the series of sections F housing said pipes, the said sections being in contact with one another and composed of the members G, H, I, the member I being perforated above said pipes; substantiallyas set forth.
4:. The furnace having the grate-bars, combined with the series of pipes along the outer edges of the furnace, the nozzles N connected with the boiler and located below said pipes D, and the series of sections F housing said pipes, said sections being in contact with one another and composed of the members G, ll, 1, the member I being perforated above said pipes; substantially as set forth.
5. The furnace having the grate-bars, combined with a series of pipes D along the outer edges of the furnace, and the series of sections F housing said pipes and being in contact with one another and each composed of the thickened member G, the thinner member H and the arch or member I connecting said members G, H, and perforated above the pipes; substantially as set forth.
(3. The furnace having the grate-bars, combined with the series of blocks D extending along the edges of the fire-box and having the vertical openings D, and the series of fire-brick F housing said blocks and perforated over said openings substantially as set forth. l
