WILLIAM FoRDYoE BEECHER, oF CLEVELAND, oHro.
BOILER-FU RNAC E.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 665,165dated January 1, 1901.
Application iiled February 20, 1900 Serial No. 5,914. (No model..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FoRDYoE BEECHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland,in the county of Cuyahoga andAState of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Boiler-Furnace, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to boiler-furnaces, and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient arrangement for securing a complete utilization of the fuel. To this end I construct the furnace as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.
' Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure lis a longitudinal section on line l l of Fig. 2. Figs. 2 and 3 are cross-sections on lines 2 2 and 3 3, respectively, of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan on line 4 4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
As illustrated in the drawings, the furnace comprises a settingA, having a bridge-wall A extending transversely in the rear of the grate B. This bridge-wall has in its top a slot A2, extending from one side of the furnace to the other and communicating by vertical channels APz with chambers A3, located within the bridge-wall.
Above the throat C, which is located between the grate B and the combustion-charm. ber D, is arranged a wall A4, provided with a slot A5, corresponding in location to the slot A2 and communicating with chambers A6, similar to the chambers AS. The slots A2 A5 are preferably located in the same vertical plane.
Within the throat C,extending transversely along the top of the bridge-wall A and the bottom of the upper Wall A4, are disposed tubes E at each side of the slots A2 A5, so that the communication of the throat C with said slots is not interfered with by the tubes E. These tubes are connected at their ends by elbows E withv superimposed longitudinal tubes or heads F F', located at each side of the setting. The heads F F of the same side are connected bya tube G. The upper heads rounding air.
F are connected by pipes H H' with the boiler l, the pipes leading into the'boiler at different levels on opposite sides thereof, as shown in Fig. 2. With one of the lower heads F" is connected a blow-off pipe J, Figs. 4 and 5,
having a Valve K, and, if desired, this ara rangement may be duplicated on the other side of the furnace. This pipe is used for the purpose of removing any sediment or for withdrawing the water from the boiler when not in use.
The chambers A3 AG extend to the outer sur. vface of the setting, as shown in Fig. 2, and
are therefore in communication with the sur- The elbows E', heads F F', tubes G, and the major portion of the pipes H H are embedded in the boiler-setting.
At the rear end of the combustion-chamber the setting has a depending wall or deliector A8 to compel the combustion-gases to pass downward and then upward in the uptake A9 to enter the boiler-dues. At the front end of Vthe boiler is the smoke-stack L.
In operation the gases rising from thefuel burning on the grate B will pass rearward over the throat C, where they will mingle with air issuing from the transverse slots A2 A5. In this manner perfect combustion will be insured in the chamber D and the smoke will be consumed. The air supplied through the slots A2 A5 has become heated during its passage through the chambers A3 A6 and channels A7 and is therefore in the proper condition to secure highly efficient combustion. At the same time as the tubes E are fully eX- posed to the gases and not embedded in the setting such tubes and the water therein can absorb a considerable amount of heat. The connection of the tubes E with the heads F F by means of elbows E allows for unequal expansion of the tubes. It will be seen that the tubes E form, as it were, a lining for the horizontal surfaces of the walls A A4, protecting lthem in a measure against the high. heat utilizing the heat While protecting those parts of the setting which are most liable to deterioration.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A boiler-furnace, comprising a setting with a fire-chamber, a grate therein, a bridge-wall rising above the grate in the rear thereof, a transverse wall depending from the top of the setting in vertical alinement with the bridgewall to within a distance therefrom, forming a throat therewith, a combustion-chamber located in the rear of the said throat and communicating therethrough with the tire-chamber, horizontal circulating-tubes connected with the boiler and arranged transversely upon the top surface of the bridge-wall and upon the lower surface of the said transverse depending wall, each tube of the upper set being located in the same Vertical plane with one ofthe tubes of the lower set, and air-supp157 channels located in the bridge-wall and in the transverse wall respectively and ter minating in superposed transverse slots or air-discharge passages located in the opposing faces of said walls between the central circulating-tubes of each set.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM FORDYCE BEECHER.
