Filter-presses.-In a press for peat, coal, &c., in which a mechanically-actuated feeding piston or plunger reciprocates in a stationary chamber, an independent extracting pressure is applied when the feeding movement is not taking place In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the material fed in at an inlet c is delivered by a piston b to a perforated chamber E, in the bottom of which slides a ram d, actuated by a link k and an arm f operated from the crank-shaft of the machine, through an eccentric, cam, &c., suitably arranged with respect to the piston crank In place of the ram d, which is flat-topped or shaped as shown, a hinged lid may serve to express the water. In other forms, a hinged arm Q, Fig. 3, adjustable by varying the length of the connecting rod or by a slotted connexion with the link, may be used.
