Abstract

799,190. Briquetting presses. ZWEIGLE, E. Oct. 27, 1955, No. 30825/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXIV] In a method of producing briquettes, material, particularly waste material, to be compressed is fed into a chamber in a preconsolidated condition, is thereafter first compressed in the chamber by pressure exerted radially of an axis of the chamber and then, without the pressing being interrupted, is further or finish compressed to form a briquette by being displaced from the chamber along its axis against a yielding counterpressure. Material to be briquetted falls from a hopper 6, Fig. 1, into a conduit 7 whence rotating vanes 9 press it into a chamber 54, Fig. 3. Dies 14, 15 having semicircular pressing faces then advance towards each other to produce a cylindrical block. Then a piston 27 having a concave pressing face advances to push the block out of chamber 54 into one of four bores 33, Fig. 5, in an intermittently rotated cylinder 28. Within the bores are disposed two double-sided concave-faced sliding dies 29, 30. The block is compressed by the piston against a die 29 to produce a briquette a having two convex ends, the die being pushed to the right against a spring 55. The piston then retracts out of the cylinder, the cylinder turns 90 degrees counterclockwise to present another bore 33 and die 29 to the piston, and the piston advances to push another block into the bore to produce a second briquette b, Fig. 6, the first briquette a remaining in its bore. This sequence is again repeated and a third briquette c, Fig. 7, is made. As the briquette c is made the briquette a is discharged as shown by the sliding movement of the die 29 or 30. The cylinder 28 is mounted in two rocker arms 46 which are urged to the left, Fig. 1, by springs 47 acting through rods 48, and by adjusting nuts 50 on the rods the spring pressure and hence the pressure applied to the material by the piston may be varied. The machine is driven by an electric motor M which reciprocates piston 27 via belt and sprocket gear 2 ...5 and crank 31. The dies 14, 15 are reciprocated via springs 23 by cams 19 on shafts 18 via mitre gears 17 and shaft 4a. The vanes 9 are carried by a shaft 13 rotated by a sprocket drive 10a, 10b, 10c from a shaft 18. The shaft to which the cylinder 28 is secured is rotated intermittently by a ratchet device (see Group XXIV). A stirring device 11 in the hopper is oscillated vertically and horizontally by a crank drive 12 on shaft 13 which carries sprocket 10b.
