Abstract

26,790. Debauche, H. J. Nov. 17. Hopper and plunger machines.-Relates to a press for compressing moist paste, such as' that obtained with wet coal, into briquettes. The material flows by gravitation from a hopper through a passage D to a mould M closed at one end by an hydraulic piston L, and at the other by a reciprocating plunger F. In order to increase the angle described by the driving- cranks during the compression period of the stroke, the plunger F is operated through a beam lever H' and connecting-rods K, G, the connecting-rod K being preferably of small length, and in tension while compression is taking place. The piston L works in an hydraulic cylinder N, which is in communication through an intermittently-operated valve P with a tank R containing water and compressed air or steam, or water in communication with an accumulator of small pressure. An adjustable escape valve o allows the piston to yield when the pressure in the mould becomes excessive. When the pressure is again relaxed, the piston is returned to its former position by a spring U acting on an extension T on the piston; this position can be regulated by means of nuts V. As the plunger F returns after compressing the material, the mould M is reciprocated by a connecting-rod f moving slowly at first, then much quicker so that the briquette strikes the plunger and is ejected from the mould, and finally is returned to its initial position ready for the formation of a fresh briquette. The mould M is drawn back by a crank Y on the main shaft S acting through a connecting-rod z, crank a, shaft b, lever c, e, and connecting-rods f, and is returned by a piston j which works in a compressed-air or like cylinder k, and is connected to a crank h on the shaft g carrying the levers e.
