Abstract

17,779. Withers, J. S., [Zandt, E. G. van]. July 26. Atmospheric gas burmers.-A burner of the type described in Specification 6763/08 for consuming the combustion products of a primary burner comprises an horizontal cylindrical shell 21, Fig. 6, with internally-flanged openings 26 at each end and with one or more outlet openings 28 at the top. In one arrangement, the shell is supported by a tubular extension 27, and struts 18 on the gas pipe 23, and a deflecting-plate 29 is arranged over the openings 28, which may consist of transversely-arranged slots, or a single slot of rectangular, V-shaped, or other cross-section. In some cases, the plate 29 is formed with angular cuts, and the enclosed material is bent up to form propections 30 which partly cover the perforations. In a modification, a lateral slot 42, Fig. 1, extends from the top opening to a slide opening 43 for lighting purposes. In a second arrangement, the upper part of the shell 21, Fig. 15, is almost entirely open, and is provided with a curved top plate 65 with end flanges 66 having recesses with which lugs 68 on the shell engage. The openings 28 in the plate are angular in shape and have roughened bevelled edges. The tubular extension of the shell is formed with an annular recess 74 for receiving the upper end of the struts 18 and with a notch 79 with which the lug 78 on one of the struts engages. The internallyflanged opening 26 may be constructed in two stages, and the shell may be formed with a front slot having a shelf-like projection for holding the lighted match for igniting the burner. The burner may be arranged in a housing 19, Fig. 1.
