Abstract

16,994. Thornycroft & Co., J. L, and Mackie, R. July 16. Water-tube boilers.-In a boiler composed of tubes connecting drums, the tubes which lie adjacent to the plane of the axes of the drums are straight from end to end, and the remaining tubes are bent at one end only; all the bends are of the same radius, with the length of arc different according to the position of the tube in the group. This arrangement enables the number of spare tubes carried to be reduced, as by making the spare tubes to correspond with the outermost tubes any of the shorter tubes can be cut from them. Instead of being all of the same radius, the bends on one side of the central rows may be of one radius, and those on the other side of another radius. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which the central tubes 8, 9, 10 are straight from end to end, and the remainder of the tubes bent at the lower end; the tubes 1, 2 are larger in diameter than the remainder .
