Application filed fieptcmber 24%, 1915. Serial No. 52,4.41.
a"? whom it Q176 concern ii; known is at l, JOHN F. eans, a
oi the United States, residing at nnm, in the county of St. Joseph and fi tate oi hlichigan, have invented eernew and useful linii'irovements in 'eainiiuperhcate' oi which the following is .t :meciliearion, reference being had there-- in to the accompanying drawing".
invention relates to certain new and ui-elul im', ro .'cn1cns in steam superheatcrs, he object being to provide superheater winch run be readily placed in position wiihin the smoke box oi an ordinary boiler and adjusted so that the tire tubes ihereof will be in alinemenl; with the fire tubes of lhc 1T.
finotl =r object of my ii'ivention is to provide a superhcater which is supported within the smoke box by a series of positioning readily pos tioned within the smoke box or removed "Lin-re ron; to make the necessary repairs.
another object of my invcntionlis to prosuperheanir which isso constri'ieted h at. priming is prevented so as to eliminate the use oi a priming valve.
nother object of my invention is to proa snperheai'er in the form of a drum having inlet pipe extending 't'rom the dome of the boiler 01? a greater size than ihe ouilet extending to the engine so as to prevent lhe engine drawing steam from the single-heater.
Another a nil "further object n"- my inveniion to provide a super-heater which is exrcedii'igziy c cap and simple in construction and one which is provided with a central partition having a series of openings adja cent iis lower end so as to causethe steam entering the some to pass downwardly over a series of fire tubes and then, upwardly over a series oi fire tubes so as to beat the same before the same is conveyed to the engine.
lithe/r and further objects and advantages o the invention will be hereinafter set forth m the novel. features thereof defined by the appended claims.
in the drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a boiler showing the superheater in position within the smoke box, Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2 E2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the partition.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the. drawings.
in the drawings, 1 indicates an ordinary form of boiler having a series of fire tubes 2, and the usual dome 3, to which is connected a steam pipe 4, for conveying the steam to the super-heater as will be hereinafter fully described, said boiler having a smoke box 5, provided with the usual smoke stack.
My improved construction of superheater comprises a drum 3, having a series of fire tubes 7, adapted to be placed in alinement with the .ire tubes 2 of the boiler, so as to allow the heat units to pass through the fire tubes thereof, so as to thoroughly heat the steam passing through the superheater. 'lhe superheater is provided with an inlet 7, to which is connected the steam pipes,- by a suitable coupling member, and with an outlet 8, to which connected a'pipe 9,"
adapted to extend to the engine. The pipes l and S) extend through suitable apertured bosses formed in the sh'cllof the smoke box, and the pipe 4 is of larger diameter than the pipe 9 so that the supply of steam to the slmerheater will be greater than the exit of the steam therefrom. The drum (3, form ing the superheater, is provided with a central partition 10, having a series of openings H adjacent its lower end, through which the steam entering the compartment 12, passes into the compartment 13, so as to cause the steam to pass downwardly over the series of fire cubes in its passage through the compartment 12 and up over the series of fire tubes in its passage through the compartment 13.
The shell of the smoke box is provided with a plurality of bosses, provided with threaded bores 14:, in. which are mounted positioning screws 15 which have their inner ends loosely mountedv in sockets 16, formed in the shell ot the superheater so that by adjusting" the pins, the superheater can be adjusted in the smoke box so that the fire tubes thereof will be in alinement with the fire tubes of the boiler, spacing pins also being employed for holding the superheater spaced from the tube sheet of the boiler, said pins being mounted within sockets formed respectively within the tube sheet and superheater as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
It will be seen that by adjusting the positioning screws 15, the superheater can be so' positioned withirithe smoke box so that, the flues thereof Will be in alinement with lbhe fines of the boiler, and that the same will be firmly held in adjusted position and in such a manner that by loosening the positioning screws the superheater can be moved out of the way in the smoke box so that any necessary repairs canbe made to theboiler.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a superheater for aboiler comprising a drum mounted within a smoke box upon a series of positioning screws, and havinga pair of compartments, one compartment being provided with an inlet adjacent its top, and the other with an outlet adjacent its. top, said compartments communicating with each other adjacent the bottom so as to cause the 'steam to travel around the fire tubes in its passage through the superheater, whereby the same will be thoroughly heated so as to prevent water from being carried by thesteam to the cylin- 1 der of the engine 1 What is claimed is I v 1. The combination with a steam boiler for a smoke box, of bosses formed on said box provided with threaded bores, positioning screws working in said bores and a drum provided with sockets'arranged within said smoke box adapted to receive the ends 'of said positioning screws.
I having fire tubes andv a smoke box, ofa
drum provided with fire tubes arranged within said smoke box, said drum being provided with sockets means for spacing said drum from the tube sheet of the boiler, and
positioning screws carried by the casing of the smoke box working within said sockets. 4. The combination with a steam boiler having fire tubes and a smoke box, of a superheating drum disposed within said smoke box having horizontally disposed fire tubes, said drum being provided with sockets, means for spacing said drum from the tube sheet of the boiler, and a plurality of positioning screws extending through the wall of the smoke box having their ends mounted within said sockets for positioning said super-heater within said smoke box.
5. The combination with a steam boiler having horizontally disposed fire tubes and a smokebox at one end thereof, of a drum disposed in said smoke box provided with horizontally disposed fire tubes, a series of independently adjustable supports for supporting said drum in said smoke box with the fire tubes thereof in alinement with the fire tubes of the boiler, said drum having a vertically disposed partition arranged centrally therein between the fire tubes thereof, the ends of said partition being bent outwardly in opposite direction to provide flanges for securing said partition within said drum to the top and bottom thereof,
"said partition being provided with a series of openings adjacent the bottom affording communication between the two compartments, formed by said partition, one of said compartments being provided with an outlet extending from the upper end thereof and the-other compartment being provided with an inlet of a larger diameter than the outlet.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
