Adding - apparatus with operating - means and printing - mechanism.-Machines of the Burroughs type, as described in Specification 27,269/07, wherein mechanism is described for splitting the machine at any selected point, are adapted to be split at will as regards the cipher - printing function at any selected point or points, and provided with means for interrupting t h e total-printing function of any one or more of the sections of the machine so formed, when such sections are utilized for listing reference or identifying numbers which do not require to be totalled. Varying functions of machine. - When the finger-pieces 25, Fig. 3, are in their front position, slide-pieces 7 are positioned by links 6 so that their lower portions 7<a>. Figs. 4 and 8, completely fill the spaces formed by the shoulders 4, 5 of adjacent rods 2, one of which is attached, Fig. 2, to each of the usual latches 717 adapted to retain the hammer-driving levers 716 of a Burroughs machine. A rocking motion communicated to the left-hand one of a series of latches is by this means transmitted in turn to the adjacent latches, and thus the usual latch-tripping function for the automatic printing of the necessary ciphers in any item or total is,uninterrupted. If, however, one or more of the finger-pieces 25 are set in the mean position, the narrow portions 7<b> of the corresponding slide-pieces 7 engage the rectangular spaces between the adjacent rods 2, as shown in Fig. 8, and thus at these points there is left sufficient play for the corresponding rods 2 to undergo their full movement due to the rocking of the connected latches 717 without communicating their motion to adjacent latches. At these points, therefore, the automatic latch-tripping function will be interrupted and the machine will be split. Printing totals. - When the left-hand fingerpiece of any section or sections of the split machine is set in its third position, the end 7<c> of the corresponding slide-piece engages, Fig. 6, above the horizontal portion of an L-shaped base 17, which is adapted to be raised, whenever the total or subtotal keys are depressed, by means of side-pieces 15. The corresponding rod or rods 2 are thus lifted and the latches 717 rocked out of action before the operation commences, and, as in the Specification above referred to, the driving-levers 716 will follow their energizing bails 712, as these are retracted, without transmitting an impulsive action of the hammers and the top-plates 618.
