Abstract
698,327. Typewriters &c. BONI, A. April 3, 1950 [April 1, 1949], No. 8334/50. Class 100(iv) Keyboard operators; keyboards.-An attachment for fitting over an existing keyboard or for incorporating in a typewriting machine comprises a number of keys T 1 , T 2 , &c. formed and arranged as a piano so that by the operation of one left-hand key and one right-hand key a full range of characters can be selected by the sole movement of the fingers. The keys T<SP>1</SP>, T 3 , T 5 , and T 2 , T 4 , T 6 , Fig. 2, represent the left and right-hand keys respectively and when one of each is depressed corresponding rods d 1 -d 6 are depressed and engage transversely disposed links L 1 -L 6 , mounted on parallel links r 1 , r,. The underside of the links L 1 -L 6 engage second connecting rods P 1 , P 2 which pivot rocking levers bn mounted parallel to the key levers. The interconnection between the links L 1 -L 6 and the levers bn, Fig. 3, is such that while each left or right hand key depresses the ends of three levers bn this is only one combination which results in both ends 5 1 , 5 2 of one lever bn being moved. Movement of both ends lowers the lever pivot An which operates an amplifying lever an so that end cn engages keybuttons kn on the machine. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 there are five white keys and four black keys for each hand, the inner white keys being largest to suit the position of the thumb. With the white keys alone twenty-five combinations are obtained and when the black keys on one side are used in conjunction with the white keys of the other hand two further combinations of twenty are obtained giving a total of sixty-five. With the use of case-shaft keys further combinations are obtained. In a modification Fig. 4 (not shown) the levers bn are operated by bell crank levers moved by horizontal links which are actuated from further bell cranks connected to the operating keys.
