Abstract
213,993. Skorsetz, H. Jan. 15, 1923. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Type-wheel actions; keys and keyboards.-The keys of a type-wheel machine are arranged in groups, each group on a single lever, and selection is determined by different strokes of the keys, for example the keys may be arranged at different heights upon their lever, with stops situated in the same plane beneath to limit their stroke, or the several keys on a lever may be in the same plane, with stops arranged at different heights beneath them. Figs. 3 and 4 show the keys 4 arranged on either side of doublearmed levers 2, 3 pivoted at 1. Two doublearmed levers are used in this construction. The keys are stepped in pairs on a lever, one key on the left-hand side corresponding in height with one on the right-hand side. Each lever arm 2 has a downward projection or nose 36 resting upon a lever 38 fixed on a bush 38<a>, Fig. 6, loosely mounted on a shaft. A rod 39 secured to the inner end of each bush 38<a> moves within guides 40, Fig. 7, connected by pivots 42, 42a to a longitudinally-slidable rack-bar 41 disposed between them. Depression of either key-lever produces an angular movement of its associated levers 38, 39, and by arranging the pivots 42, 42<a> at different heights on the rack-bar 41, the same depression of each key-lever produces a different longitudinal movement of the rack-bar and a different amount of rotation of a toothed wheel 18 secured at the bottom of the type-wheel shaft 6. The stops or releasing-keys 19, 20 associated with the key 4 are arranged at different heights below the key-levers 2, one on each side, and the keys 4 are of such a width that a finger placed on one of them projects laterally so as to engage the adjacent releasing-key when the key-lever is depressed, thereby depressing the releasing-key about its pivot 21. The keys may be modified by pivoting them separately upon the key-levers so that they swing downwardly upon the releasing- keys in addition to depressing the levers; or they may be pivoted upon a common transverse shaft above a transverse releasing-key provided with steps to obtain the requisite different travel for each key. A ring 11 secured on the shaft 6 below the type-wheel is provided with steps 12 disposed so that when the type-wheel is adjusted to a particular character, a corresponding step on the ring is engaged during the striking operation by a pawl 5 at the extremity of the arm 3 of the key-lever. Hammer-impression arrangements.-The releasing-keys 19, 20, Fig. 3, are provided with downward extensions 22, Fig. 4, resting upon forked arms 23 at one end of a pivoted lever 24. The other end of the lever 24 terminates in a hook 26 normally engaged by a nose 27 upon a lever 29. The lever 29 is keyed upon a shaft 30, to which is also keyed a hammer 31 actuated by a spring 32 to strike a spring-controlled pin 33 opposite the type-wheel, to effect the printing when the depression of a releasing-key puts the hooks 26, 27 out of engagement. The hammer is returned to its original position by a string 44 connecting it to the lever arm 2. Case-shift mechanism.-The type-wheel 7, Fig. 4, carrying three rows of type around its periphery is keyed upon a bush 8 which is slidable upon the shaft 6. A sleeve 15 slidable upon the bush 8 is engaged by a shift-lever 49 and a sleeve 16 fixed on the lower end of the bush is engaged by a second shift-lever, the pivots of the levers being position to enable the type-wheel to be raised through either two rows or one row respectively.
