The principal object of the invention 1s 4the provision of mechanismv for` printing totals on a strip, slip or checkin such a manner as to clearlydistinguish them from the preceding items.' It is of course to be understood that-each bank of keys l,controls a registering lWheel 111 and connected to each Wheel bythe sleeve 114 is a disk 25 which` is lprovided with a cam groove 26, 'into Whichextendsa pin 27 mounted upon the upper end of 'a vertical rod 28. The gears 4 are secured to the inner endsof a series of nested sleeves 40, which carry at their outer ends type segments 41, see lFig. 2. Each segment is provided with one large and onesmall series of duplicate types 42 and 43 respectively, the smaller type for printing the items and the larger type for recording thetotals. A pair of levers 44 and 45 are pivoted upon a stub shaft 46 vextend? ing from the side frame of the machine- These levers are provided at their pivotal points, with upwardly and downwardly extending arms 47 and 48 and at their forwardl ends each is provided with a laterally extending -arm 49, which carries arubber impression block 50, see Fig. l5,r The arms 47 are provided with rollers 51, which are held in contact with the periphery of a cam 52 secured to one end of the rotary shaft 21, by springs 53,'. only one of which is shown. The record strip 54 is .led from a supply roller 59 which is supported loosely upon a shaft `50 over guide pins 58 to the feed roller 59a. The shaft 60 carries 'fast thereon a ratchetwheel 61 and a pinion 62. A plate G3 equipped with elongated slots G4 and 65 which straddle the shaft 60 of the supply roller and the nested sleeves 40 respectively, is provided` with a spring pressed pawl G6 which engages the ratchet 61 and feeds the ratchet forward, when the plate 63 is moved upwardly by a cam 67 coming into contact with a roller 68 secured to the upper end of the plate 63. The said plate is retractedv by a coil spring 69 one end of which is securedto the frame of the machine and the other end to the plate. The cam 67 is secured to a pinion 70 loosely mounted upon the outer end of the sleeves 40 and is arranged to be rotated by an idle pinion 71 which meshes with another pinion 72 secured to the rotary shaft 21. The feed roller 59 is provided with a gear 60a which meshes with a pinion 6.1 which in turn meshes with a pinion 117 connected to gear pinion 62 through an intermediate pinion 118. Through the train of gears aforesaid, the feed roller is thus advanced one step after eachprinting operation. At each operation of the machine the sliding plate G3 is reciprocated, and this through pawl GG rotates slightly theratchet 61, which through the gear train shown including pinions 62, 11S, 117, 61 and 60, serves to rotatethe feeding roller 59a. As the details are successively printed, it will be seen that each detail impression is moved through the aforesaid mechanism directly under the corresponding total types, for this reason it becomes necessary to give the. strip an extra `feed whenever it is desired to print a total.
This additional feed is secured by a spring pawl 88 secured to a reciprocating part 83 hereinafter described and -which is moved only when a total impression is to be taken. Itv will be seen by reference to Figs. 2 and 7 that the totals are printed directly under the details but in very large hold faced vtype which is easily distinguished from the de,- tail type. Further. after a total is printed, the regular feed of the strip takes piaf-,e

Connected to each arm 75 is a cam 78 which engages a roller 79 secured to the inner end of each arm 34- and cams the latter inwardly. As previously described, the cam disks 25, which are connected to the registering wheels 14 control the location of the arms 34, so it'will be seen that as the arms 34 are cammed inwardly, they will carry the keys 1, corresponding to the amount shown on the.-v wheels 14, with them b meansof the flanges' 38 and the pins39. his movement of the shaft 73 also raises a forked shaped frame 80, see Fig-2, by means of a cam 81 secured l to the'end of the shaft 73 which engages a roller 82 mounted in the lower endv of the. frame. The other prong 88 of the frame' 80 normally lies under thelever 55 so that when the frame 80 is raisedthe lever'will be moved from the path of the arm 48 of the total lever 45t() in front of the arm 48 of the itemv lever 44.

As the link 93 moves rearwardly, the shoulder 92 cams a latching plunger 97 upwardly nected at one end tothe lower lever 94 and at the other end to the front tie bar 100 of the machine. The lever 94 is secured to one 4vend of a short pivoted shaft 101, which carries at its other end, see Fig. 2, a short uplug 103, which, when the lever 94 is rocked, as above described, will be brought into the path of the flange 104 secured to the side of a cam 105 fastened to'the rock shaft 3. 4Nowmwhen the crank handle 90 is rotated, that part of the cam 105 cal rying the flange 104 will be rocked downwardly, thereby throughmeans of lug 103 and ange 104, rocking shaft 101 an additional istance, so that the upper end of lever 94, see Fig. 1, will engage with the forward end of link 18 and raiseA the latter so as to disconnect provided with a I .by preventing the rocking of the pinions 15 to couple the pinionsl 9 and 10 when the link 18 is cammed forward. Near the end of the operation of the machine, a shoulder 106 formed upon a disk 107, secured to the shaft 21 will engage'with a roller 108 mounted iu .the upper end of the plunger 97 and raise' .the latter to disengage its lower end from the shoulder 92 of the link 93, thereby permitting the return of the parts to normal position by means of the spring.99. It will beseen from this construction, that when the total crank 77 is actuated and the'handle 90 operated, the amount represented by the keys depressed will be displayed by the indicators but will not be added upon the accumulatingmechanism.

IVhile it is necessary to have a series of setting elements for eachl ,registering wheel employed to control the setting of the total printing types, it is not necessary where there are employed a great number of wheels, that all of these setting elements should extend beyond the frame of the machine in the shape of keys.
It will of course be understood that the regular operation of the machine may give the detail strip suiiicient feed to equal the combined widths of the corresponding detail and total types, in which case it would not be necessary to employ the additional feed device connected to the total lever. In this event, however, considerable of the de- 'tail strip would be wasted, as the detailsv would be printed quite far apart. I therefore prefer to employ the construction shown, `in which the detail amounts are printed as close together as is consistent with legibility.
It is to be understood that while I have show the platen levers 44C and 45 under the control of the total printing crank 77, this part of the invention is not to be limited to the printing of items and totals, but may be employed in any recording mechanism using a plurality of 'impression devices.
By the term selective devices used in some of the claims, it is meant to cover broadly any means for selecting or determining the amount to be registered, indicated or recorded. y
V'hile the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfil the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the one form of embodiment herein shown and described, for it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms all coming within the 'scope of the claims which' follow. v
Having thus described my invention what I claim as'new and desire to secure by Iletters Patent is': Y
1. In a machine of the class described, the combination with an accumulating vmechanism, of apiinting mechanism coperating therewith 'and including diierent distinguishable type characters, and connections- -for printing 'details and totalsone below the other from said characters respectively.
2. In a machine 'of the class described, the `combination with an accumulating mechanism, of a printing mechanism cooperating therewith and having distinguishable detail and total types and devices for effecting the printing of the details and totals one below the other.
3.- In a machine of the class described, the combination with an accumulating mechanism,of a printing mechanism coperating therewith and having type carriers with corresponding and distinguishable detail and total printing types and devices for effect- ,ing the printing of the details and totals one below the other.
4. In an accounting mechanism, the lcombination of type carriers each having corresponding and distinguishable detail and total printing types, of means for taking impressions one below the other from said types.
5. In an accounting mechanism, the combination with type carriers each bearing detail and total types of different characters,
of a plurality of vplatens operable at will for taking impressions one below the other from the detail or the total types.
6. In a machine of the class described, the combination with type-carriers having a plurality of sets of distinguishable type, of means for differentially setting the typecarriers, and means for taking an impression from any desired set of type.
7. In an operating mechanism, the combination with type carriers 4each having corof a total operates to leave a blank space on said recordkmaterial adjacent said total.` 9. In a machine of the class described, the combination with keys and a key set mechanism, of an operating mechanism,- a printlng mechanism and an accumulator. and total printing connections whereby the keys are operated' automatically to control the key set mechanism `and printing mechanisms or printing the totals when desired.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with a totalizer element, of means for differentially operating same, a series of keysadapted to be manually and selectively operated whereby to control the movements'of said diilerential means, mechanism for operating any one of said k s, said lmechanism comprising devices di erentially movable to establish a. connection between said operating mechanism and the key to be operated` and means carried bv the totalizer' element for controlling the differ-- ential movement of said devices.
