Abstract

4214. Lehmkuhl, S. P. F. Feb. 21. Resistance to propulsion, reducing-Compartments k are secured to the hull of the ship, and in each. compartment is mounted an endless band w which is moved by the water in a direction opposite to that of the motion of the ship. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the endless band is built up of sections f, and is filled with air under pressure proportional to the depth of immersion. The band is provided with wheels running on rails. Water is prevented from entering the compartment k by pneumatic packing l. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, a cloth band faced with india-rubber is supported by a fixed covering s<1>.
