Abstract

Switches, quick-action. - In prepayment attachments for electricity meters a switch is closed by a spring member released by the prepayment device, and is afterwards opened by a throw-off spring which acts in two steps under the control of the meter mechanism. After prepayment a hand-operated spindle g and a wheel 6 geared to a disk 8 are rotated, the consequent oscillation of a pawl 27, which prevents back motion of the disk 6, removing a pin 31 from a stop 30 on a lever 28. A spring 29 bearing on a pin 32, which works in a slot 33 in the framework and on which an arm 36 is frictionally mounted, then throws the lever 28 into the position shown in Fig. 5, the nose 41 of the arm 36 simultaneously depressing the extremity 40 of the switch-arm, thereby closing the circuit through contacts 19, Figs. 2 and 3<a>. The nose 41 passes out of the path of the extremity 40 of the switch-arm, a pin 38 on the arm 36 working in a cam-slot 39 in the frame. An arm on the spindle g engages a projection 44 on the lever 28 and returns that lever and the arm 36 to the initial position. The closing of the switch shifts a sliding spindle 12, and carries a spring 10 upon an arm 11 thereon out of a notch in the disk 8 which is rotated by the prepayment mechanism. The meter mechanism causes the arm 11 and pin 10 to follow after the disk, and, when the pin comes opposite the notch, the switch is opened by its throw-off spring. Just prior to entering the notch 9 the pin 10 enters a shallow depression 15 in the disk 8, thereby lowering the switch-arm to contacts 21, Figs. 2 and 3<a>, closing the circuit through a resistance 23 to effect the dimming of the lamps.
