Abstract

353. Reason, H. F., and Reason Manufacturing Co. Jan. 6. Make-and-break switches, mechanical; clock-work actuation.-In a make-and-break switch operated at predetermined times, having compound adjustable setting-disks and a spring-actuated release, the disks are provided with slotted flanges mounted concentrically and adapted to determine the time of operation of the switch. The arbor of the clock is provided with a dial and two concentric flanged disks 8, 9, having slots 12 and pointers 8<a>, 9<a> which can be moved oppcsite any given hour on the dial. A releasing lever 20, pivoted at 21, carries at one end a pin 23 adapted to engage the flanges, and at the other end has a bracket 24 which is engaged by pins 36, 37 on a crank-plate 34 adapted to be driven by a coiled spring capable of hand winding. The spindle 31, on which the spring and crankplate are mounted, is provided with the usual check ratchet-wheel 32 and spring pawl 33, the latter being mounted on the plate 34. The crankplate carries a connecting-rod 38 operating the switch C, which is preferably provided with carbon contacts 39, vertical guide-rods 40, and a bow spring contact 41. In using the apparatus the clock is first set to standard time as indicated by a fixed pointer 44, the dial being rotated by means of a hand 5. The flanged disks are then set to the required positions. One of the pins 36 on the crank-plate 34 presses on the bracket at the end of the releasing-lever and causes the pin 23 to engage one of the flanges. When the pin reaches one of the slots 12, it passes through and releases the crank-plate, which makes half a revolution, thereby operating the switch and bringing the other pin 37 into engagement with the bracket 24 and causing the pin 23 to bear on the other flange. The slot in the inner flange is provided with a guard or catch point which allows the pin to enter when it is already in engagement with the flange, but prevents it from passing through in the event of the two slots becoming coincident.
