Clutches, friction; gearing for stopping and starting machinery.-A disk b<1>, mounted on a shaft b, is provided with a series of concentric or other perforations b' in which slide spring- pressed and adjustable studs b<3> of self-lubricating material such .as a compound of graphite and carbon, the studs frictionally engaging a disk a' on the shaft a. The forward movement of the studs may be limited by shoulders thereon. In order to allow gradual or partial engagement, the disk b<1> is operated by a lever d<2> connected to a be l-crank lever d<5> by a spring d<4> which normally keeps the disks fully in engagement. Pressure is relieved by movement of the lever d<5> first to slacken the spring and then positively move the leyer d<2> by engagement with a roller d<5@ >on the lever d<5>.
