Expansion joints; overlap joints with inner pipe gripped by packing; overlap joints with slotted sleeve.-A coupling for pipes comprises a conical slotted ferrule c having a threaded portion c<3> which screws into a socket a and compresses packing e against the inner pipe d. The cone c is compressed to grip the pipe d by a nut b engaging with external threads on the socket a. The joint may be duplicated to form a coupling for two plain pipes d, and the coupling may have an annular chamber, the walls of which are thin enough to yield a little, to form an expansion coupling.
