Abstract

[Addition to 12,779/08.] Field carriages; recoil apparatus. - Relates to the type of gun-carriage described in the parent Specification, in which the wheel axles can be turned about vertical axes to bring the wheels into such a position that the gun can be traversed about the trail-spade, and consists in providing a brake for securing the wheels in the traversing position. Fig 2 shows a plan of the carriage A in the traversing position with the brake K<1>, K<2> in its operative position. The wheels E carry limbs D arranged to swivel by means of bolts D<1> in forks C' on the ends of the wheel axle C. The wheels may be fixed in either the travelling or traversing position by means of bolts G, which engage with either of the holes f<2>, f<3> in an angle-plate F, F<1> moving with the pin D<1>. The brake wedge-block K<1>, K<2> is moved longitudinally in a support M by means of a link H<2> when a shaft H is rotated by a handle H'; the locking - bolts G being simultaneously moved by arms on the shaft H. The brake - operating handle H<1> moves over a segmental guide J, shown in Fig. 4, and may be fixed in one of several notches i<3>, i<4>. The arrangement is such that the handle H<1> is against a stop i<2> when the wheels are in the travelling position but when the wheels are to be rocked, the handle H<1> is moved over to a stop i<1>, and the bolt G is thus withdrawn. If now the handle H' be moved into engagement with the notch i<3> the wheels are locked by the bolt G in the traversing position, but the brake is not put on until the handle is moved into one of the notches i<4>.
