Abstract

23,642. Colman, H. D., and Peterson, B. A. Nov. 5, 1908, [Convention date]. Doffing-arrangements; bobbin-applying apparatus; t h r e a d - holding and thread-severing arrangements. - A doffing- mechanism comprises a carriage which is movable across a spinning- machine and operates upon each spindle in turn, empty bobbins being automatically fed from a magazine attached to the carriage, the full bobbins discharged i n t o a receptacle, and the threads automatically severed. The carriage 9, which carries the various appliances, is moved in guideways 12 secured to the bolsters across the machine by means of a star-wheel 46, which engages with the lower parts of the bolsters. The wheel is actuated by a crank 40 which operates the other mechanisms; or the carriage may be pushed across the machine by means of a handle. The doffing-tube 22 and donning- tube 23 are mounted on vertically and horizontally moving slides 36, 25, the slide 36 working in the slide 25. These slides are actuated by pin and cam slot respectively on a disk operated by the crank 40, the cam-slot being so arranged that the slide 25 is practically stationary relatively to the machine during the doffing and donning of each pair of spindles. The doffing-tube comprises two telescopic sections 22, 22, Fig. 5, which, when elevated, lift the full bobbin by means of eccentric spring-dogs 57 and discharge them into a receptacle through a tube 68, and which, when lowered, are moved relatively to each other by reason of the engagement of the part 22b with the ring rail, so that a stop on the slide operates thread shears 62 attached to the part 22. The dogs are so shaped that they freely pass the bobbins during the downward movement of the tubes. The parts 22, 22 are normally kept in their extended position by means of a spring. Empty bobbins are fed by a chain conveyer from a magazine 80 to a shoot 97, and thence to the donning - tube, wherein they are retained by a spring 71 until they are separately ejected by a dog 74 attached to the slide 36 and deposited on an empty spindle, upon which they are subsequently pressed by a spring 24 attached to the slide. When the magazine is being filled, the bobbins are held by means of a spring bail. The carriage is provided with rollers whereby it may readily be moved from machine to machine.
