Abstract

251,156. Buchanan, R. B. Aug. 18, 1925. Doffing-arrangements; threadsevering-arrangements.-Relates to doffing-apparatus for spinning - frames of the kind designed to travel lengthwise of the frame to remove the full bobbins from and place empty bobbins on the spindles. A casing 1, moved along the frame and retained in front of a series of spindles, carries mechanism operated by a hand-wheel 2 so as to cause arms 40, 43, which respectively carry chucks 38, 44, to remove the full bobbins and deposit them in a hopper 89 and to withdraw empty bobbins from hoppers 56 and place them on the spindles, the yarn being automatically removed to the rear of the spindles before the bobbins are doffed and afterwards severed. The hand-wheel 2 is geared to a shaft 6, which carries a mutilated gear 7 at one end, and a mutilated gear 21 and a cam 31 at the other. The gear 7 operates a shaft 9, Fig. 2, which, by means of a crank and connecting-rod 12. oscillates a shaft 13 carrying the arms 40, and the cam 31, by means of a lever 33, moves the shaft 13 longitudinally so as to remove the arms 40 from alignment with the spindles to allow the passage of the arms 43. The arms 43 are carried on a shaft 20. which is oscillated to move them from the position shown in dotted lines to that shown in full lines and back again by means of the mutilated gear 21, and between these movements, is lowered, so that the arms place the empty bobbins on the spindles, by means of the gear 7. The shaft 20 is carried in vertical slides 18, which are raised and lowered by cranks 16 on a shaft 15 operated by the gear 7, and is oscillated by a slide 27, Fig. 6, engaged by a crank 24 on a shaft 23 operated by the gear 21. The empty bobbin chucks 44 comprise spring-pressed shoes 45, Fig. 12, slidable in the body of the chucks, and spring latches 49. A shoe 54, Fig. 2, is so disposed that, when the arm 43 approaches the magazine 56 and the shoe 45 engages the lowermost bobbin 64 therein, it engages the trip plate 53 and releases the latch 49, the spring 47 then moving the latch clear of an abutment 50. When the empty bobbin is pressed home on the spindle, the shoe 45 is moved against the action of the spring 47 so that the latch 49 is again engaged by the abutment and the bobbin freed. A rail 67, carried bv brackets 68 slidable on rods 69 and loosely supported on the shaft 20, serves, when the carriage is traversed, to engage the yarns and move them with the travellers to the rear of the spindles, and. when the shaft 20 is lowered, to lead them across severing bars 72, 73. The yarns are severed by moving the bar 73 relatively to the bar 72 bv means of a lever 75, the movement of the lever, at the same time, releasing a latching cam 83 from a stop 85 on the spindle rail of the machine, with which it is engaged during the doffing operation. The initial movement of the arms 40 when doffing a section of spindles brings the stems of the chucks 38 into contact with a trip 62, and thus releases the bobbins doffed from the preceding section and allows them to drop into the hopper 89. The chucks 38, which may be of any suitable construction, for example, such as described in Specification 249,753, are pivoted on arms resiliently secured to the arms 40. The hoppers 56 are shaped so that the empty bobbins lie with their tops elevated above their lower ends and are provided with offsets 66, Fig. 17, so as to prevent the weight of the whole supply being taken by the lowermost bobbin.
