Abstract
22,805. Sparks, E. Oct. 6. Actuating valves and cocks. -Relates to gas lighting and extinguishing apparatus actuated by temporary increases of pressure in the mains, of the type in which a straightthrough gas pipe is employed. To the side of a gas pipe m is fixed a casing c containing a weighted bell a open to the gas pressure. On the top of the bell is mounted a bracket f carrying a spring - pressed pawl g engaging a ratchetwheel h on a spindle i extending from above the bell into the pipe m. Fixed to this spindle is a cam-wheel l, having half as many projections as the ratchet-wheel has teeth, and bearing on this cam-wheel is a conical lift valve o. When a temporary increase of pressure occurs, the bell rises and advances the ratchet-wheel one tooth, and opens or closes the valve o as the case may be. The spindle i has a shoulder i<11> held against its casing b by a spiral spring, or a spring washer p. The bell is guided by a central guide e, and bv three rollers d on the side at which the pawl is situated, and one d' in a slot opposite these. A weighted pawl may replace the spring-pressed one.
