A c t u a t i n g valves. - Relates to apparatus for lighting and extinguishing g a s from a distance by variations of pressure in the gas mains in which a valve, such as m, Figs. 4 and 6, carried by a diaphragm e is opened by an increase of pressure acting under the diaphragm and is held open, after the pressure has been subsequently decreased to the normal, by means of a detent l carried by the diaphragm and coacting with one of a series of supporting-pins i carried on ratchet-wheels g operated by the movements of the diaphragm. The valve m, Figs. 4 and 6, is suspended freely from the diaphragm, as shown, and is disposed in a conical chamber o so that it is guided correctly to its seating. The pawl k, Fig. 4, is pivoted to a member k<1>, which is mounted directly on the diaphragm c, and to an arm r mounted on the axle of the ratchetwheel whereby the pawl is always retained in a correct working position. The pins i project laterally from the face of the ratchet-wheel, as shown, or are arranged between, and connect together, a pair of such ratchet - wheels. Further, the detent l is disposed transversely with respect to the pins i thereby ensuring certainty of action of the detent.
