22,454. Royce, Ltd.. and Hulley, R. D. Oct. 2. Capstans; driving - gear.- The electric motor 2 drives the hollow shaft 8 of the capstan barrel 3 through worm gearing. Fixed inside the barrel 3 is an annular rim provided with ratchet teeth. One or more pawls are carried by a crosshead keyed to the shaft 8. The controller 4 is operated through bevel - gearing by a shaft which passes down through the hollow shaft 8. A friction ring 25 is toothed at 25<a> and engages a pinion 26, which in turn engages a pinion 27 fixed to the pivot pin of the pawl. When the handle 10 operates the controller to start the motor in one direction, the pawl is forced into engagement with the ratchet rim 11 and the barrel is driven, but when operated in the reverse direction the pawl is moved out of engagement. Balance weights 21 or the equivalent tend to retain the handle 10 in the zero position. In a modification, the shaft 8 is solid and the controller is mounted to one side of the apparatus to give a ' remote ' control.'
