Driving - gear for winding and paying-out apparatus.- Epicyclic driving-gear for the winding-drums of cranes and winches is fitted with ratchet mechanism arranged to rotate the drum automatically at an increased speed in the direction for lowering. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a loosely - mounted internallytoothed casing d is engaged by planet pinions connected to a drum on the shaft g. The driving - pinion c and ratchet-wheel b are both fixed to the shaft a; the pawl h is shown carried by the casing, but may be carried by a member f. When hoisting, the casing is held by a brake, and the planet pinions climb round the internal teeth. When lowering, the brake is released, and the gearing is then automatically locked by the ratchet mechanism so that it forms a rigid coupling between the driving and drum shafts.
