Abstract

28,174. Torazzi, M. F. Dec. 6. Driving-gear for winding-apparatus; selfsustaining gear; winch handles, engaging and disengaging.-In connexion with winches and like hoisting-mechanism, means are provided for disconnecting and arresting the handles' or like driving-member when the load begins to run down, and the descent of the load is regulated by a brake which is inoperative during hoisting. A hand-crank shaft 5 is slidably and rotatably mounted in bearings in the winch frame 2 and connected by a dog clutch 20 to the pinion 6 by which the drum is driven. The shaft 5 carries a block 14 having ratchet or oblique teeth 3 engaging similar teeth on a loose grooved disk 19, which is prevented from backward rotation by friction pawls carried by the casing 9. During forward movement of the handle 4, the flat faces of the teeth 3 drive the disk 19, but if the motion is reversed, the disk 19 is arrested and the action of the oblique teeth 3 moves the shaft 5 axially and releases the clutch 20, the handle-shaft being arrested by the friction of the cone 17 on the inside of the casing. The load shaft is arrested by the action of spring-pressed friction pawls 25, which are carried on a disk 27 secured to the pinion 6 and engage an internal groove on a ring 30 enveloped by a brake band 35. Lowering of the load is effected by easing this brake.
