Abstract

20,561. Robeson, A. M., and Davidson, A. Sept. 8. Wear, preventing and adjusting for.-Relates to centrifugal pumps for pumping liquid containing grit or other solid matter, and consists in the provision of easily removable linings and grit-expelling devices for the protection of the bearings. The suction chamber a, Fig. 6, is fitted with a lining w, and doors are provided so that pieces of rock or the like may be removed. A protective sleeve m<3> encloses the shaft f and extends to the impeller. The pump chamber is fitted with an annular lining n, Figs. 6 and 7, secured in position by screws u, Fig. 7, and side linings o, q. The linings may be removed without disconnecting the suction or discharge channels. Water is supplied through pipes m', p<1>, z, z<1>, and prevents grit from reaching the bearings. Small vanes d<1> are provided on the exterior of the impeller to assist the flow of this water. The bolts for securing the side linings to the casing do not extend right through the linings, whereby interruption of the inner or wearing face is avoided. Pumps are described in which single and double impellers with conchoidal suction chambers are used. In a further modification, linings of suitably-shaped blocks of silex, concrete, or vitreous material are provided. The impeller shaft f, Fig. 4, and the driving-shaft g are connected together by a coupling comprising a split cone i and a conical socket h. This coupling allows a slight angular play between the coupled shafts. The coupling is secured by bolts j. On withdrawal of the bolts j, the disengagement of the cone and socket is effected by screwing-up a starting-screw k.
