Abstract

18,236. Tuckfield, C., and Garland, W. G. de F. Aug. 7. Fats and fatty oils, purifying.-Fats and oils are bleached and purified by spraying them into air by means of low-pressure superheated steam. The oil is heated in a tank B by steam from a boiler A, is then filtered upwardly, preferably through animal charcoal D, and finally is sprayed in an ejector by means of the steam used for heating purposes. The spray and steam enter a cylinder E, which is cooled bv air currents caused by convection in an open jacket F. The oil deposits on the cylinder E, is blown through holes H on to its outer surface, and is collected in a tray G. The bleaching is facilitated by the action of light. A second ejector may be used for the supply of bleaching-agents, such as chlorine or ozone, where these are required.
