Abstract

Regulating.-An improvement in centrifugal pumps is described which, by reversal, may be applied to turbines where the impeller delivers into surrounding diffusion passages, the passages are continued by passages of uniform crosssectional area. The invention is shown applied to a multi-stage centrifugal pump, in which the impellers A deliver into diffusion passages 11. Passages 14 of uniform cross-sectional area connect the passages 11 with the suction eye of the succeeding impeller. The passages 11, 14 are formed in rings 1, H, respectively, the bends in the passages 14 being bounded by ribs 12 on the casing G. At the suction eye, the sides of the passages 14 come to sharp lines 4. The final delivery preferably takes place parallel with the shaft through an orifice D placed on one side of the centre of the end wall F. The passages 14 in this last section F are modified as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 to lead the fluid smoothly to this outlet. A cone 3, Fig. 1, may also be fitted.
