Application filed April 8, 1905. stun No. 253.4%. 7 v p To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that i, ALBERT E. GUY, oi Trenton, Mercer county, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps, of which the following is a specifica tion.
The object of theinvention is to permit a centrifugal pump to be driven at high speed by a steam-turbine or like motor. cially desirable to drive such a pump at high speed when a high pressure of discharge is re quired rather than mere quantity of outflow Thus, for example, high dischargepressure is desirable in the feeding of stean't-lmilers. It is well known, however, that high-speed rotary= fluid-impelling devices, such as centrifugal pumps, cannot work efficiently or properly because the ve* locityoi the rotary impeller is so great that suction is imperfect. If, however, the liquid be delivered to the impelling device, under an initial pressure the difficulty is overcome. accomplish this by combining with the impelling device an injector. disposed on the suction side of said pump and acting upon the incoming liquid to increase the pressure thereoi", also by employing a portion of the kinetic energy of the flow produced by the impelling device to increase the kinetic energy of the How entering said device. It will of course be observed that the increased pressure of liquid delivered by the pump is gained at the expense of a portion of the discharge;
but this coi'idition is advantageousin view of the fact that it is high pressure of discharge which is sought for and by this device accomplished.
in another application for Letters Paten Serial No. 2533M, filed simultaneously h re with, I have described and claimed, broadly, the combination of a pump and means actuated by a portion of the liquid delivered thereby for increasing the pressure liquid. on the suction side of said pump.
My present invention is an apparatus embodying this combination in a construction in which the liquid from the deliverypipe is delivered by the injector or injectors directly to the impeller or impellers and in which the injectors are formed and placed so as to effect such delivery.
In the accompan a vertical section ing drawings, Figure 1 is the pump on the line at as It is espe" of the Specification of Letters Patent;
I i i l i the liquid is drawn in atiiEiS/EGNOR :io

impeller-wheeli is here sluiwn as dupleir. and has two sets of blades 5 6 at renuveiyt pe site pitch, so that when thdwheel is rotated both ends of "the wheel and delivered at it's middle portion, as shown by the arrows. The put np-casing 3' has an annular chamber '7 surrounding the wheel com municating with delivery-pipe 8 and also two side chambers 9 1.0,Which communicate with the branches i1 112 of the inlet or suction pipe 13. The outlet ends of the chambers s 10 are contracted, so as to have a diameter a less than diameter 0 (Z of the in let ends of the impeller-wheels, and are surrounded by annular chambers 14 15, which may be into-gully formed with the casing. The internal 'd. ameter cf oi the cha1nber-outlets is greater tl'ian the diameter a t of the ends of the inlet-pipes and equal to the diameter of the openings (3 d. The chambers 14 15 connect with the delivery-pipe S by the pipes 16 17. The liquid from the delivery pipe 8 at high pressure is forced through the pipes 16 1? to the chambers 14 i5 and escapes di rectly into the wheel through the annular space surrounding the ends of the branch inlet pi it $22. The outlet ends of the l i pipe ii and the surrounding outlet aranc end of the chambers 9 therefore unitedly ror-m injector delivering liquid to wheelblades 5, and the outlet end of branch pipe 12 and the surrounding outlet end of chamber 10 also unitedly form an injector delivering liquid to the wheel-blades 6. The liquid coming from the delivery-pipe imparts velocity to the iir uid coming through e suction-pipe 13 and branches 3. 12, i pressure to enable the im {3 31i ciently to operate despitet mix I claim- 1. A ump, a casing therefor, an. injector actuated by a portion of the liquid. delivered by said pump and acting upon the liquid on the suction side thereof: the said injector being formed of the wall of said casing.

2 In a centrifugal pump, can impeller- -wheel, a casing therefor, a suction-p1pe,a delivery pipe, a chamber with which said suction-plpe com1nunicates,-having a constricted outlet and deliveringdirectly into said wheel,
an annular chamber in said casing surrounding said constricted outlet, and a conduit connecting said annular chamber with'said delivery-pipe.
3. In a centrifugal pump, an impeller wheel having two sets of blades respectiyely *of opposite pitch, a casingtherefor, a suctionnecting said annular chambers with'said delivery-pipes. l
1, In a centrifugal pump, an lmpellerwheel and an in ector actuated by a portion of the liquid delivered by said wheel having 'its outlet iii-proximity to and registering with said wheel inlet, and constructed to increase the pressure of the liquid entering said wheel.
5. In a centrifugal pump, an impeller- .wheel, a' casing therefor, a chamber in said casing communicating-with the suction-pipe of said pum and having. its outlet in profitimity to sai wheel, an annular chamber hav= ing an outlet surrounding said first-named chamber-outlet, and a conduit connecting said annularchamber with the pump-delivery. V
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
