Mantles.-I n v e r t e d mantles, during the hardening and forming process, are enclosed in a chamber containing only sufficient air for complete combustion, the combustion gases being withdrawn from the upper end of the chamber. In the apparatus shown, the mantles are suspended from strips 3 in a troughshaped chamber 1 having a refractory lining, and the combustion gases are withdrawn from the upper widened part 5 of the receptacle through pipes 6, 7. Compressed or ordinary air may be admitted through preferably adjustable apertures 8, or these apertures 8 may be connected to the pipe 7, in which case fresh air enters the chamber from above. The burners 9 are moved up and down by means of guides on the supports 11.
