Abstract

403,792. Case-hardening. MACHLET, A. W., 1016, Lafayett Street, Elizabeth, New Jersey, U.S.A. Oct. 31, 1932, No. 30605. [Class 72.] A furnace for carburizing and nitrogenizing materials comprises a bell shape retort removably mounted in a heating chamber, the retort having a removable bottom plate to support the material, an inlet at the top for admitting gases and apertures at the bottom for the discharge of the gases into the heating chamber. In one form a retort 31 is connected by a bayonet joint to a removable plate 43 on which rests a basket 53 to hold the work. A removable distributing plate 35 rests on lugs 33. Carburizing, or nitrogenizing gas, or gasproducing oil is introduced from a flow meter 59 through a pipe 25, and the spent gas passes out through clearance spaces between the bottom plate 43 and the retort. By disconnecting a union 58 a stream of powder containing gas-producing elements may be introduced into the retort through the pipe 25. The retort rests on a spider support 49 in a chamber 40 heated in any manner. An alternative support 74 is provided with slanting guides 75 and fits into a recess in a bottom brick 76. Instead of a basket a rack 70 comprising an integral bottom plate 72 may support the material. A series of retorts may be provided for successive heating in the chamber.
