Abstract

10,902. Knight, J. May 8. Blades. - Relates to blade-fixing devices in which the blade roots or holders are wedged outwardly from beneath in undercut grooves in the rotor or stator. Referring to Figs. 2, 6, and 8, undercut grooves 1, 2 in the rotor 3 and the casing 4 receive the blade-holding sections 6, which, when in position, are wedged outwardly by pieces 10. To allow the introduction of the sections 6, the groove in the rotor is enlarged at one point, and is provided with parallel walls 11. Into this part, a filling-piece of the full depth of the groove is afterwards caulked. Instead of cutting away both walls of the groove to provide an entrance for the sections 6, one wall only may be so cut, the recess thus formed being afterwards filled when all the sections are in place. The sections 6 may be dispensed with by providing the blades 9 with tapered roots 15, Fig. 13, which are introduced obliquely into the groove, as shown, and are wedged from beneath. The root 15 may be made with a radial slot 16 ending in a circular hole 17, Fig. 4. A second wedge-piece, either integral with or separate from the wedge-piece 10 is forced into this slot, thus slightly opening out the oblique faces of the root. The Provisional Specification describes also a construction in which annular channels are cut in the rotor and stator opposite the peripheries of the blades, rings provided with thin soft-metal annular fins being caulked into them. Damage due to fouling of the blades is thereby obviated; at the same time, the clearance space is reduced.
