Description

No. 809,277. PATENTED' JAN. 9, 1906. J. H. BARKER.
TURBINE.

JOHN HENRY BARKER, OF NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, ENGLAND,
ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES ALGERNON PARSONS, OF NEWCAS- TLE-UPON-TYNE, ENGLAND.
TURBINE- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9, 1906.
Application filed September 26, 1905. Serial No. 280,147.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN HENRY BARKER, a
land, residing at 2 Collingwood street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in the county of Northumberland, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Turbines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention' relates to improvements in the methods of construction of turbines, particularly steam-turbines; and its object is to obtain a simple method of fixing turbineblades or producing bladed drums. Hitherto such drums have been made by fixing bladed strips in grooves formed in the drum, these strips being calked and securely held in place.
The present invention consists in dividing the blade-carrying drum or ring in the plane of the centers of the blades and fixing some of the blades conveniently, each alternate blade to each of the adjacent rings, so that when these are brought together a complete circle of blades all in alinement is obtained.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification, Figure 1 is an end view of one-half of a blade-carrying ring according to this invention. Fig. 2 represents in developed plan two such halfrings before they have been brought together. Fig. 3 represents in developed plan the halfrings brought together so as to form a completely-bladed circle, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the bladed ring when complete.
In carrying the invention into effect according to the form illustrated the blade-carrying member is divided into rings a a, the divisions being in the plane which contains the centers of the blades I) b. The blades 6 b may be fixed into slots in the side of the ring, so that one-half of the outer portion projects beyond the plane of the ring at 6, as seen in Fig. 1. The distance between the blades in the halfring is twice the pitch it is required that the blades shall work at. Two such rings are formed and placed against one another in the manner indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, so that all the blades come into alinement, thus forming a complete circle of blades, as seen in Fig. 4E.
The blades may be formed integral with the half-rings by cutting out in any convenient way-say by millingfrom solid metal. This may be readily done, since the space between the blades will give the necessary clearance for the tool. In this way a simple and strong fixing for turbine-blades is obtained.
' In axial-flow turbines it will be understood that numbers of such rings are formed and strung together on a suitable spider and held togiether by long bolts 0 passing from end to en Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
1. A bladed turbine-drum comprising in combination a plurality of rings, blades carried by said rings so that the blades project from the lateral face of said rings, the rings being associated so that the blades projecting from adjacent faces of the rings come into alinement, substantially as described.
2. A bladed turbine-drum havinga plurality of rings, blades carried by the rings and spaced at double the circumferential pitch required, the blades being arranged to project laterally from the rings for one-half the width of the blades and the rings being associated so that the blades projecting from contiguous faces of the rings fall into alinement, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a ring (.1, having the alternate blades of a row formed thereon so as to project laterally for one-half the width of the blade, an adjacent ring similarly carrying the remainder of the blades which form the complete row, bolts 0 binding a plurality of such associated blade-carrying rings, sub-
