Abstract
819,433. Compressor and turbine rotor blades. McCULLOUGH, A. L., and WILKINSON, M.A. July 31,1956 [Aug. 1, 1955], No. 23611/56. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXV] In a turbine or compressor in which blades are mounted by their roots in undercut slots extending more or less axially at the periphery of a rotor disc, means are provided to prevent endwise movement of the blade roots in the slots. In the turbine rotor shown, undercut axial slots 11 are formed in the peripheral flange 12 of the rotor disc 13. Each blade 10 is formed with a correspondingly-shaped root 14 having a stop 15 at one end thereof, the blade stop abutting against one side of the peripheral flange 12 upon assembly. The bottom surface of each slot 11 is formed with a channel 17 so as to receive a blade locking strip 19, one end of the channel 17 being deepened as at 18. The locking strip 19 is flexible and has a shank 19a and projections 20, 22 extending in opposite directions at its ends, the projection 20 also having a tab 21. Upon assembly, a locking strip 19 is inserted in a channel 17 and is deformed. so that one end lies in the deepened portion 18 so that the blade root 14 may be entered into the slot 11 until the blade stop 15 abuts against the side of the rotor flange. The end of the locking strip 19 is then released so that the projection 20 bears against the outer surface of the blade stop 15 whereby the blade is locked in position. A recess 16 is provided in the stop 15 to receive the locking strip. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4, the channel 17<SP>1</SP> is of uniform depth across the bottom of the blade mounting slot and the locking strip is bent so as to form a projection 23 which is received in the channel. The stop 22<SP>1</SP> is of increased depth so as to lie against the side of the rotor flange. The end 22 of the locking strip may alternatively be received in a transverse slot formed at the bottom of the channel 17. A projection may be provided on the locking strip 19 at the end adjacent the projection 20 but extending in the opposite direction thereto so that when the locking strip is deformed, this further projection. engages the side of the rotor ftange and prevents the locking strip sliding out as the blade root is entered into the slot,.
