Abstract

10,429. Lindsay, R. May 3. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing.-The speed transmitted through epicyclic gearing is varied by altering the internal frictional resistance. This is effected by forcing together or apart portions of the carrier of the planet gear elements. A driving-pulley A carries an internally-toothed ring B, constantly meshing with a pair of planet gears G. The gears G are mounted on spindles F secured to a carrier frame E, which is journaled loosely upon the shaft C to be driven. The gears G mesh also with a sun gear D secured to the shaft C. When the pulley A revolves, the frame E is normally carried round at half speed, and the shaft C remains at rest. Interposed frictional resistances retard this free movement, and cause the shaft C to Le driven. The frame E is divided into two parts, each carrying one of the gears G. Each part frame has a boss G<2>, and the bosses are arranged to face one another, as shown in Fig. 2. The bosses G<2> are forced together, and the parts of the frame G turning about the shaft C cause the spindles F to be thrust forcibly against the gears G, which cannot both roll on both the gears B, D at once. An adjustable frictional resistance is obtained in the following way. A bolt H is secured in one of the bosses G<2> by a set-screw I, and passes right up through the other boss G<2>. A lever K is formed at one end as a nut to engage the screwed upper end of the bolt H. At the other end, the lever K is formed with a groove engaged by a pin K<1> secured to a grooved collar L slidable upon a sleeve E<1>, Fig. 1, projecting from the frame E. Longitudinal movement of the collar L turns the nut upon the bolt H, and thrusts the bosses G<2> together. In a modification, the bosses G<2> are thrust apart by a sliding wedge. The invention is shown applied to other kinds of epicyclic gear trains.
