Abstract

9769. Knight, A. B. April 25,1908, [Convention date]. Engraving.-Relates to a machine for engraving the resist on glass tumblers and similar articles in which the articles are held pneumatically o n t h e work-holder, the tools are moved pneumatically to and from the work, and means are provided for retracting the tools for the passage of projections such as handles. The article X is supported on a holder D rotating on a vertical axis and driven by worm gear 17<1> from a shaft 7, which is driven by a belt 10 from a shaft rotated by a motor. An air - pump exhausts a reservoir, which is connected by pipes 40, 51, 16 with the work - holder. The work-holder consists of a disk d with a packing-disk d' clamped by nuts 13, 13<1> to the top of a tube 14 which is capable of sliding on the top of a tube 16. Secured by setscrews 15<1> to the tube 14 is a sleeve 15, which is mounted in a bearing 18 and is provided with a worm-wheel 17 engaging a worm 17<1> on the shaft 7. The lower end of the tube 16 is connected to the suction-regulator I. A r r a n g e d around the holder D are four engraving-needle holders E in which the incising- point 21 is held by a spring 22 passing through an eye in the needle. The rod 23 carrying the point is normally held away from the work by a spring in the cylinder 26, but is caused to feed the tool to the work by connecting a cylinder 28 with the exhausted reservoir by way of the regulator I. A spring 32 is interposed between the collar 33 and the cross-piece 31 to minimize the shock as the needle contacts with the work. The regulator I is so arranged that the suction is first produced on the work-holder D, to secure the work, and then in the cylinders of the tool-holders, and consists of a main body i, Fig. 9, having a part 44 connected to the main suction-chamber, and in communication with ports 46, 47 in the face. Passing through the regulator are two passages 48, 49, in communication respectively with the work-holder and the tool-holders. On the face of the regulator is a centrally-pivoted cover i<1> provided with a handle i<2>, formed in the face of which are channels 54, 55. On turning the cover i<1>, the channel 55 reaches the suction orifice 47 before the channel 54 reaches the port 46, and, on the reverse movement, the channel 54 communicates with the atmosphere by way of the port 53 before the channel 55 reaches the airinlet 52. Either engraving-tool may be thrown out of action by disconnecting the vacuum from the corresponding tool-holder. The pattern may also be varied by disconnecting certain of the toolholder cylinders 28 from the regulator I and connecting them to a manually-operated valve 61. In order to retract the tools on the approach of a handle &c., an additional valve K is provided for each tool, and is connected by a pipe 67<1> with the vacuum cylinder 28 of the tool-holder, and by a tube 71<1> with the coupling 56. The valve is provided with a cover 77 which, as the work-holder rotates, is engaged by a striker 78, set in a definite position relative to the handle on the article. The cylinder 28 is thus opened to the atmosphere and the tool retracted. In the machine described, four tools are employed, three rotary tools E for cutting the body and one H the border of the pattern. The rotary tools are driven by bevel-gear from shafts 98 which are driven by change-speed gearing 90 ... 95, and 100 ... 104 from the shaft 7. The rotary tools E are oscillated, and, for this purpose, the holders are supported on a bracket secured to a tube encircling the shaft 98. This tube carries a crank 127 connected by link 128 to a variable crank on the shaft of the wheel 95. The border - cutting tool H is carried on a universally-mounted holder on a standard adjustably secured on an extension 138 of the framing, by which means the tool can be raised or lowered or moved to or from the centre of the work-holder. In order to enable the rotating tools to cut wavy lines, the head 150, Fig. 7, is furnished with an extension 152, which is pivoted on a piece 153 secured to the rotating rod 23. The extension 152 is forced by a spring 156 against a cam 154, which is shaped according to the design and secured to the stationary tube 125, and is thereby vibrated.
