SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,015, dated February 11, 1902.

Be it known that I, HENRY HESS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Ober-Schoeneweide, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented a certain newand usefulDevice forAdj usting theWork on Machine-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to means for centering or adjusting metal blanks or castings on machine-tools; and it consists, essentially, in interposing a work-carrying plate between the blank or casting and the machine-tool carrier, the work being first affixed to the said plate and the latter then adjusted without guiding means in any direction by suitable means, such as hydraulic or other pistons on the carrier, as hereinafter particularly set forth.
The invention relates mainly to the heavier class of machine-tools, such as lathes and shaping or planing machines for working big castings-to wit, the housings for dynamoniachines and the like, which are generally of comparatively thin metal and require very exact centering or adjustment on the carrier.
In order to render the present specification easily intelligible, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a vertical central section through a machine-tool for turning dynamo-housin gs, showing one form of embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 .is a vertical central section through the pressure-distributing device for the adj usting-pistons. Fig. 3 is a section on line a; a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section through the pressure-piston housing, showing the piston in side elevation. Fig. 5 is a plan of the pressure-piston and housing; Fig. 6, an end view of the same; Fig. 7, a plan of the mechanismfor rotating the cutter-tool, and Fig. 8 a sectional plan of the distributing-valve and its pipe connections.
The invention is described herein in connection with a machine-tool having one or more rotary cutters for turning out the housing of adynamo, which is attached to and centered on a stationary work holder or carrier.
Between the work-carrier plate F and the housing A being worked is inserted an intermediate plate B, to which the work-carrying chairs 0 are bolted in suitable position in the well known manner. The plate B is movable in the horizontal plane on the carrier-plate F and may be adjusted thereon by means of a series of pistons g, arranged around the edge of the carrier-plate F and adapted when operated by hydraulic or other pressure to push the plate 13 in any direction according to the position of the said pistons. In the present instance four such pistons 9, having housings G, are employed, the same being arranged in pairs diametrically opposite one to the other and the center lines of the pairs being at right angles to each other. It will, however, be understood that any number of pistons might be employed.
M is the bed-plate, on which is mounted to rotate the disk M,carryin g the adjustable carriers E for the cutters e, which serve to turn the casting out. The face-plate M may be driven by worm-gearing R B, Fig. '7, the worm-wheels R of which are mounted on vertical shafts 1", supported in the base-plate M, while the driving-worms R are mounted on the shaft w, driven from the driving-shaft 20 by means of the pulleys Q, belt-pulleys W, and driving-belt w. The operation of this part of the machine is well known and needs no further description.
Hydraulic pressure is described as the actuating medium of the centering device, the pressure being generated by the hydraulic pump P, driven by an electromotor Z, by means of gearing z 2 as will be clearly seen from Fig. l. The pressure medium passes through pipes it" from the pump P to the distributing-valve K, Figs. 1 and 8, whence it may be directed, as hereinafter described, to any one of the piston-housings G through pipes 6 The adjusting or centering pistons g are mounted, as previously stated, around theintermediate plate B and are adapted when extended to act against the corresponding point h of the said plate, and the pressure fluid may be operated to flow to any one of the said piston-housings G by means of the handwheel L in the center of the machine, which turns the rod Z, and thus adjusts the distributing-valve, as hereinafter set forth. Referring to Figs. 4 to 6, the piston g is enlarged within the housing G, as at 9 and is provided with a cross-head 9 having eyes 9 to which the ends of chains q are attached, said chains passing over guide-rolls g mounted on stub-shafts g of the housing G, and having their opposite ends attached to free hanging weights g, Fig. 1, which return the pistons to their normal position as soon as they have been relieved from the action of the pressure fluid. The latter enters the piston-housing at the end behind the piston through the pipe 2' which feeds pressure from the distributingvalve K.
The distributing-valve K is illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, and consists of-the following parts: To the lower end of the rod Zis attached a disk N, having a cam-groove 9?. in its cylindrical surface. In this latter groove rolls 0 engage,mounted on stub-shafts 0, supported in the upper ends of the arms 0, having guide-feet 0 adapted to slide on the lower end of rod Z and prevent the said arms from turning. vertically-reeiprocatory hollow pistons S,having ports (2' d therein. These pistons or slides are incased in sleeves T, fitted into the housing U'and provided with ports d (7. which correspond with the .ports of the vertical slide-valves when the latter are in a certain position. The ports (1 of the sleeves T serve to establish communication between the pressure-chamber D of the housing U and the interior of the slide-valves S by means of the ports cl, and the ports 61 serve for the outflow of the pressure fluid to the outlet pipe 71', as will be seen from the left-hand side of Fig. 2, when the piston-valve is raised. The camgroove of the part N serves to raise one or other of the arms 0 and its corresponding piston-valve, according to the position of the said cam-groove,as will be readily understood.
The device operates in the following manner: The dynamo-housing to be worked is first clamped to the chairs 0 on the intermediate plate B in the known manner, and then the latter plate, together with the work, is centered on the base-plate F of the machine with regard to the faceplate M by operating the various pistons 9 until the center of the housing to be worked corresponds to the centerof The lower ends of the arms 0 carry the machine, as will be readily understood. After adjustment the plate Bis clamped to the bed F in well-known manner. The same means may be employed for adjusting work in connection with planing and shaping tools, the invention not being confined to centering Work on rotary tools. The adjustment in a lineal direction will be readily understood fromthe foregoing description and needs no further explanation.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a horizontal machine-bed, a horizontal work-holding plate resting thereon and adapted for free movement in all horizontal directions, a series of independent shifting devices disposed upon said bed around said plate and adapted to engage and move the latter upon the former, a hand controlling device common to said shifting devices and serving to put said shifting devices selectively into action, and means connecting said common controlling device with said independent shifting devices.
2. A device for adjusting the work on machine-tools consisting ofan intermediate plate movable in the horizontal plane in any direction on the bed of the machine, a series of housings and pressure-pistons mounted on the machine around the said plate and means for actuating by pressure any one of the said pistons to move the said plate in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
3. A device for adjusting the work on machine-tools consisting of an intermediate plate to which the work is attached, a series of pressure-pistons mounted on the machine-frame and adapted when extended to move the said intermediate'plate, a distributing-valve inserted between the pressure -'generating source and the said pistons and means for adjusting the same to direct the pressure to any.
one of the said pistons in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
