6146. Hollick, H. March 15. Stays.-Cape-cart and similar hoods are held in a collapsed position by spring means which also serve to hold the hood in a position in which it acts as a dust-screen. In one form the rear hoop A of the hood is held in the position shown in full lines, Fig. 1, by means of a spring E surrounding a rod C, which is pivoted to the hoop and passes through a swivelling pivot D. The collapsed hood when thus supported acts as a dust screen. In taking up the position shown in dotted lines, the spring E is compressed, and the rod C slides through the pivot D. The spring E tends to keep the hood down. In an alternative construction the pivot D, instead of being fixed, may slide against the action of a spring, on a suitably placed rod carried by the vehicle, thus giving a double spring effect.
